"Rolling Stone's" Sheffield On Alex Chilton's Passing
Rock journalist Rob Sheffield is weighing in on the death of Alex Chilton. Sheffield is recapping the late rocker's unorthodox career on RollingStone.com, citing Chliton's sometimes, quote, "head-scratching" decisions. Chilton followed mainstream success with Box Top's singles like "The Letter" and "Cry Like A Baby," with punk recordings, New Orleans R&B, and a run with the rock band Big Star. Sheffield also remembers Chilton's taciturn ways with the press. The rock journalist says that during his only attempt to interview Chilton backstage at a solo gig, the musician said, quote, "I have to rest my voice." As to that voice, Sheffield described Chilton's singing as, quote, "full of pain and yearning, even when the chiming Rickenbacker guitars were pure teenage kicks." Chilton died of a heart attack on Wednesday, March 17th at age 59. He is survived by his wife, son, and sister.
