Session Singer For Bowie, Sir Elton Dead At 66
One of rock's respected session singers has died. The UK's DailyRecord.com reports that when residents of a small Scottish island attended a funeral for Lesley Cox on Friday, they were surprised by tributes from the likes of Sir Elton John and David Bowie. Cox -- who'd passed away of cerebrovascular disease the previous week at age 66 -- had an active music career. Under the name Lesley Duncan, Cox provided vocals on projects like John's "Madman Across The Water" and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon." She also sang on sessions with Dusty Springfield, Ringo Starr, and others. Cox's neighbors, however, simply knew her as an upbeat woman who liked to garden. Gordon Chalmers -- a councilman on Tobermory Island, where Cox lived -- commented on the singer's passing. He said, quote, "I don't think she was widely known in the community for her music work, she was not a publicity seeker, she was just the wee woman who did her garden at Aros Lodge."
