ASCAP To Give Patti Smith Founders Award
ASCAP is honoring poet and rocker Patti Smith next month. The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers, commonly referred to as ASCAP, has announced that Smith will receive its Founders Award this year. The 63-year-old will pick up the prize at the performing rights society's 27th Annual Pop Music Awards at Hollywood's Renaissance Hotel on April 21st. The award celebrates writers and composers who've inspired other music makers with what ASCAP describes as their, quote, "pioneering contributions." Previous recipients include Annie Lennox, Sir Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Smokey Robinson, and Elvis Costello.
Regarding the award, ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams said, quote, "Patti fused raw rock energy with the heart of a poet and ignited the 1970s New York punk scene. She expanded the boundaries of artistic expression, musically and otherwise, inspiring generations of rockers worldwide." |
