X-Men Origins: Wolverine |
| |
While it may seem contrary to popular belief and box office receipts, the making of a full length feature film based on characters of the modern comic book genre can be a dicey proposal. Seemingly, for every “IronMan” or “Spiderman” that transcended limits of storytelling and special effects, there is Ang Lee’s “Hulk” or George Clooney’s anatomically correct Batman that nearly shuts down a franchise.
The “X-Men” movie series based on the popular counter culture Marvel comic of the same name captured a huge following. Perhaps by surprise, Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the rogue mutant Wolverine struck a chord with audiences as they grew enamored with the razor sharp anti-hero.
The DVD release of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” follows a lukewarm box office acceptance that dropped off financially after a huge opening week in the spring. Perhaps the biggest obstacle for audiences to overcome was the “prequel” nature of the movie that only contributed to a convoluted story arc full of flashbacks and explosions.
That’s not to say that “Wolverine” is a bad movie, because it wholeheartedly is not. “Wolverine” is visceral and enthralling in its landscape, vision, and cinematography. The film offers a cornucopia of sights, sounds, and explosions that will leave the audience wide-eyed. Unfortunately, with all of that going for “Wolverine”, there are stretches of the film that make the movie seem like the longest 1 hour and 50 minute movie in the history of film making.
Jackman “looks” incredible as Logan. His ripped physique adds to the Wolverine’s mystique, but tries as he may; Jackman combined with some great special effects just can’t overcome poor script writing. “Wolverine” can be breathtaking in scope, but in the same vain can be yawn inducing with its plodding recreations.
Good for a night’s rental if you keep your finger on the fast forward button. “Wolverine” earns a dull 2 ½ claws out of 5.
