Proper care of your wedding gown

Proper care of your wedding gown is important before and after the wedding. Even if you’re just planning to put your gown into storage after the wedding, proper care will ensure it’s in perfect condition if you eventually want to sell it or lend it to a friend or family member for another wedding. Consider the following wedding gown care tips:

Where you bought it and who you bought it from. It’s a good bet you spent a lot of time researching where to purchase your wedding gown. If you purchased it from a bridal shop or a wedding gown professional, be sure to ask for specific directions on how to care for the gown you purchased. They will be able to tell you how to care for the special trims and decorations you gown has. If you haven’t purchased your gown yet, you may want to choose a professional that personally cleans and processes the gown rather than a shop that send the gown out for alterations and cleaning.

Hanging the gown. When preparing for the wedding and after, you will probably want to hang the dress on a hanger, even if it is only temporarily. It is important to remember to use the hanging loops connected to the side seam located inside the gown. Never hang the gown by the shoulders or any other part of the gown. Hanging on a hanger can cause the gown to stretch or tear.

Permanent and temporary storage. When it comes time to store the gown, never use a plastic bag or a plastic container. Plastics emit a fume that can cause your gown to become discolored. In addition, moisture can become trapped in the plastic causing your gown to mildew. When choosing a location to store your gown, avoid places where temperatures swing. A bedroom closet is a good location. Basements and attacks are poor choices unless they are temperature controlled.

Proper care of your wedding gown is important before and after the wedding. Although it’s unlikely you’ll ever wear the dress again, that doesn’t mean it won’t get used again or that it shouldn’t be kept in perfect condition for as long as it is in storage.
